what does gloss, matt, silk or uncoated paper mean?

Knowing the paper stock that you will use in your next print project is important as ultimately it will determine the final look and feel of your printed piece.

Uncoated Paper
During the paper manufacturing process, all paper will start out uncoated. Uncoated paper has a porous surface so is quite absorbent. What this means is that when printed on, it will soak up the ink more compared to a coated stock. This style of paper is often referred to as bond and is used for printed materials that need to be written on. Items such as notepads, letterheads, envelopes, writing books and student training manuals, to name a few. It offers quite a natural or organic look for your printed piece. As the ink is absorbed more in the paper, colours will look different compared to coated paper stocks.

how to make a font embedded pdf in word

While we highly recommend using Adobe Indesign to create artwork, we often receive PDF files from artwork designed in Microsoft Word. Depending on the project of course and the way it will be printed – digital or offset – will greatly depend on whether this artwork meets our press requirements. Typically, digital printing is more forgiving, so if you must supply your print ready PDF from a Word document, we highly recommend you download the attached instructions to ensure your fonts are embedded in your document correctly to avoid any issues with your printed job.

What happens if fonts are not embedded?

Embedding fonts in your pdf file allows anyone who opens your file to see the document as you intended. If you don't embed a font, the pdf viewer will substitute a font if it is not available on the computer viewing the document, and the result usually isn't what you intended. This can greatly effect the quality of the printed document and make the printed fonts quite inconsistent.

Download our instructions here.
